Kodi Kelly, Doug Kurzawski, and Stephanie Fick have been named principals at Sherrelwood, Mesa and Fairview Elementary schools, respectively, and are already working with school staff and students to ensure a smooth transition into the coming school year. All three are skilled assistant principals in Westminster Public Schools.
Maureen Bangsund was named principal at Westminster High School earlier this month and you can learn more about her and watch a video profile in the accompanying story.
After an interview process that considered multiple candidates, Superintendent, Dr. Jeni Gotto says the new principals were selected because of their success in their current roles as school leaders.
“I am so pleased with this year’s selection process and our choices because they are ready to hit the ground running and are already committed to our community and our Competency Based System,” Gotto told the Board of Education. “We strongly believe in developing our own leaders and principals, not just because of their understanding of CBS but because it reflects our belief in Leadership at all Levels and our commitment to recognizing and rewarding hard work.”
Kodi Kelly | Incoming Principal | Sherrelwood Elementary
Kelly is currently the Assistant Principal at Colorado Sports Leadership Academy, which is home to many middle school students who attended Sherrelwood as younger students. Here is part of what she wrote to the community after her selection: “As an educator and leader, I believe deeply in the brilliance of every student, the power of meaningful relationships, and the importance of creating a school environment where students feel seen, safe, and inspired. I look forward to collaborating with the dedicated staff at Sherrelwood to support our students’ growth—academically, socially, and emotionally.” Kelly replaces long time Principal Cindy Davis who informed district leaders last summer of her plans to retire at the end of this school year.
Doug Kurzawski | Incoming Principal | Mesa Elementary
Kurzawski is the Assistant Principal at nearby Sunset Ridge PK-8, so he knows all about the northern part of the WPS community. In his letter to the community he wrote, in part: “In the weeks ahead, I plan to work closely with Janelle to gain insight into what makes Mesa special and to understand the needs and priorities of the students, staff, and families. My goal is to ensure a smooth transition while continuing the great work happening at Mesa.” Kurzawski replaces Janelle Stastny who has a long, distinguished career in the district. Like Cindy Davis, Stastny informed the district of her plans to retire last year to provide plenty of time to prepare for a transition.
Stephanie Fick | Incoming Principal | Fairview PK-8
Fick knows the Fairview community well since she is the current Assistant Principal in the building. She wrote a letter to the community that treads in part: “Fairview is a special place because of the amazing people who make up this community. I look forward to working alongside all of you as we continue to foster a positive, enriching environment where every student can thrive.” Fick replaces Lisa Cyr who is tackling the important role as Director of Transportation for WPS.
District leadership will now work to select assistant principals and school deans.
